Our Story & Mission

Chapter 1

The Problem

In spring of 2024, Matt Hulse was in the middle of his Masters Program, developing games, apps and other interactive experiences. One winter break, Matt visited his hometown in upstate NY and noticed something. The speed of innovation happening in the tech industry, thanks to AI and other enhancements wasn't propagating to rural areas, and medium to small businesses. Not because it was inaccessible, but because those businesses weren't sure how to leverage it to maximize their revenue.

Matt saw an opportunity and quickly met with economics and industry business ops managers to learn more about the opportunities for bringing these services to small and medium sized businesses.

Chapter 2

Knowing the Business

Matt went boots on the ground in fall of 2024, and began talking with small businesses in the upstate area and learning more about their concerns and pain points. Something was clear, these businesses knew what their biggest issues were, but couldn't address them thanks to the over-inflated costs of big tech companies and tools needed to solve them.

These companies wanted a more agile company, that could iterate quicker, and operate with a larger margin on smaller contracts.

Chapter 3

The Idea

Seeing the opportunity in front of him, Matt approached clients and pitched his services under the name StarSouls Studios. Nicknamed after the term Soul-Stars, used to describe smaller stars that are in a geo-synchronous orbit very close to one another, working together to create the same gravity as a larger star.

StarSouls landed its first official contract in spring of 2025, and worked to deliver "Still" a 2D roguelite. It was a resounding success, delivered in only a month, ahead of schedule and under-budget. This made it real, not only could StarSouls help uplift small businesses, it could do so and save them money.

Chapter 4

Growth

In summer of 2025, StarSouls acquired funding and began work on pilot contracts to explore the games and website industry. Around the same time, two sub-studio teams were formed, each with 5 members dedicated to development: Coming Calamity & OverExtended Games.

Utilizing these two studios, StarSouls increased its published titles count by two, and by winter of 2025, StarSouls had published 3 IPs in under 10 months, and completed 10+ client contracts for small businesses all over the up-state region.

Chapter 5

The Present

This brings us to now. Currently StarSouls publishes and manages Coming Calamity Studios and OverExtended games and supports development of their respective titles, Vessyl, and Footslog on Steam early access.

Alongside this, StarSouls has brought STILL and Herdspun Harvest to mobile markets including the Play Store and App Store to showcase its client projects.

Chapter 6

The Future

With 4 IPs under its belt, and more upcoming projects on the horizon, its client list growing, StarSouls continues to search for small and medium businesses who are looking to up their game digitally, and step into the new age of interactive media.
